Oil Ministry’s First Skill Development Institute, Bhubaneswar completed its two years of successful journey in skill training of unemployed and underprivileged youth of Odisha. As part of the 2nd foundation day celebration, Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon’ble Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas & Skill Development & Entrepreneurship attended the as Chief Guest of the occasion and launched several initiatives of the SDI, Bhubaneswar.
Addressing the 2nd Foundation Day celebration of SDI, Bhubaneswar Union Minister Pradhan said that, India’s most promising Skill Academy promoted by Oil PSUs under Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas in the line with Government of India’s Skill India mission is now in its second year. Launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th July 2015, the National skill Development Mission aims to train over 400 million (40 crore) people in India – in different skills by 2022 ranging from Industrial Welding, Industrial Electrician to Computer Data Application Course.
With the SDI, Bhubaneswar doing exceptionally well, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoP&NG) has taken an initiative of setting up several Skill Development Institutes (SDIs) in different parts of the country, i.e., Vizag, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Guwahati and Raebareli.
Adding to this Shri Pradhan also said that, “SDI has acquired 46.172 Acres of land out of 60 acres of land allotted by State Government at Jatni and is inching towards a Mega Model Skill Academy of International Standards to be able to provide skill training to around 50000 youths over the next 10 years in various regular trades related to Hydrocarbons & local industries. I am happy to know that reputed employers / recruiters have shown their interest and preferring SDI trainees for recruitment as the students who have passed from SDI have proved their merit by being excellent skilled workforce in their organizations. SDI, Bhubaneswar will drive the skill ecosystem of the Eastern India”.
As per the vision of our Prime Minister, India would soon be a global economic powerhouse and the world would look up to the nation for its needs. The youth of the nation would play a key role in realizing this vision and therefore it is extremely important that we equip our workforce with employable skills and knowledge to make India a developed economy. As we all are aware that India today is one of the youngest nations in the world with more than 62% of the population in the working age group (15-59 years), and more than 54% of the total population below 25 years of age. This group needs to be targeted and shaped well in order to ensure the nation shapes up well in the near future, stated Shri Pradhan.
A Special postage stamp coinciding with the 2nd Foundation day celebrations of SDI pilot campus was also released with brand logo of SDI Bhubaneswar on Konark theme to reflect rich heritage of Odisha.
A new course on LPG mechanic course was introduced by Minister for renewed focus on the safety in use and Maintenance & Repair of Domestic and Commercial LPG installations with proper job role for fresh skilling/ Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)/Entrepreneurship and Self-employment.
On this occasion, five students of SDI Bhubaneswar who have won the state level skill competitions as part of IndiaSkills 2018 in welding 1st, 2nd & 3rd and in Electrical 2nd and 3rd positions were also felicitated.
A collage of success stories on SDI trainees was showcased during the event. The AV capturing the impact of skill training being provided in transformation of their lives in various ways was also shown. Journey of several youth were described on their makeover from an unemployed to entrepreneur / self-employment, an unemployed to become employed, an employed to be skilled employed etc. and centre of attraction was serious efforts being made by SDI towards “Women Empowerment”.
On 9th May 2016 ‘Akshaye Tritiya’ day, Dharmendra Pradhan,Union Minister of State I/C, MoP&NG and Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister inaugurated Oil Ministry’s first Skill Development Institute in the capital of Odisha in a temporary campus. This institute is promoted by Oil Public Sector Units viz. IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, BPCL, HPCL, OIL, EIL and Balmer Lawrie under the aegis of MoP&NG and is managed by Indian Oil Corporation Limited to fulfil the dream of Skill India Mission of Prime Minister of India.
Construction activities have already been initiated for Mega Model Skill Academy for which foundation stone was laid by President of India on 18th March 2018. SDI has already signed an MoU with NBCC, a Navaratna Public Sector Enterprises for establishing the infrastructure for the SDI main campus. Also, provision is being made for having incubation centres to encourage innovation among the youth and to promote start-ups.
