Stress comes in many forms these days. A bad day at work or an unexpected expenditure can down your spirits. An argument with your Mother-in-law or may be your kid just flunked in a test, can stress you out. Habitually one opts for tablets, a cup of rejuvenating herbal tea, soft music, a round of yoga or a tête-à-tête with a close friend who would pep up your dull mood.

But then how about setting up a fish tank? Have you contemplated something on these lines to relieve your stress?

Research has revealed that watching aquarium fish calms you down and reduces your stress levels. Academicians from the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth University and the University of Exeter studied the physical and mental responses of people looking at tanks with varying numbers of fish and found out that watching the fish swim around led to “noticeable reductions” in blood pressure and heart rate.

The larger number of fishes being watched kept their consideration longer and enhanced their frame of mind. Watching those beautiful fish going about their daily business in a colorful aquarium is a great way to balance your pressure. It also enhances the aesthetic appearance at homes. Keeping fish is probably the easiest way to keep a pet in your house.

“Although we cannot converse with fish, watching their tactics helps to forget everything for a while and a feeling of tranquility surrounds you. Fish are noiseless and silent pets. Moreover maintenance is stress-free as the water can be changed once in 3 months”, says Arpan Panda, a business entrepreneur.

The aquarium fish also helps to keep the energetic kids busy steering them away from their naughty antics. The children love to name the fishes and even share their day’s activities with them.

The least amount of attention, space and money required has increased the interest of making fish a loved pet. “My interest in ornamental fishes has converted my hobby into a profitable business. We sell a variety of fish like goldfish, guppies, mollies, angelfish, cat-fish to kissing guramis etc”, confides Subhransu Prusty, a part-time pet dealer.

Fish don’t snarl, meow, whine, cheep, twitter or moo and above all don’t demand pampering.  Therefore in today’s times of constant worry and busy urban living, maybe aquariums can step in to give an oasis of pristine serenity and relaxation.
