Roop Kund is a glacial lake situated in an altitude of 16,000 ft. and is famous for human skeletal remains whose origin is still unknown. An expedition named “Mission Roop Kund” to the mysterious Roop Kund lake situated in Gharwal Himalyas of Chamoli district in Uttarakhand was underway from 4th -13th October, 2017.
The team from Odisha, comprising of eight members including three girls was headed by Susanta Das, an Adventure Sports Mentor & Wildlife enthusiast. Apart from this adventurous trek, the team created awareness on the occasion of wildlife week to keep Himalayas green & clean, conserve the rich biodiversity of the region and to protect the skeletal remains undisturbed for the future generation.
The expedition was a joint venture of Nature & Wildlife Conservation Society of Odisha (NWCSO) and Odisha Sport Climbing Association (OSCA). The Wildlife experts and environmentalists of NWCSO met and encouraged the team at a ceremony in Mayur Bhaban, Bhubaneswar prior to the mission. The team members are Swarnalata Dalai, Ranjita Behera ,Ananya Mohanty, Durga madhab Mohapatra, Somanath Khatua, Amrutendu Baral , Ajit Padhi and Susanta Das.

Jamir, Governor of Odisha, legendary mountaineer Padmashree Bachendri Pal, Chief Wildlife Warden, Odisha Dr Sandeep Tripathy, IFS, Sri DVS Khati, IFS, Chief Wildlife Warden, Uttaralkhand, Sri Saroj Pattnaik, IFS(Retd), eminent wildlife expert & President, NWCSO and Sri Sisir Kumar Acharya, IFS, Director, Nandankanan Zoological Park & Hony. Secretary, NWCSO, OdishaLIVE CEO Nilambar Rath and other dignitaries expressed their good wishes to the team for a successful expedition and their safe return prior to the mission.
