Maha shivratri, this day is dedicated to Lord Shiva. People assemble outside Shiv temples to worship lord Shiva. “Shiva” means “Destroyer of Evil”. This year Maha shivaratri is celebrated on 4th March. The day is observed by fasting, meditating, chanting prayers and different offerings in the temple.

According to the Hindu almanac, Maha shivratri is celebrated on the 13th and 14th day of the Phalguna month, (February and March). Number of people and queues were seen outside various temples of lord Shiva since dawn.

This day is also known as “the great night of Shiva” and it means overcoming from ignorance and darkness. After the morning rituals, people observe a day long fast and many devotees also stay up all night in order to celebrate ‘Jagara’. On this day people also go to the temple or ‘jyotirlingams’ to pray and pay their respect.
