About Bahuda Yatra
‘Bahuda Yatra’ is the return chariot festival of Lord Jagannath and his siblings Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra of Sri Jagannath Mandir at Puri, Odisha. The festival is part of the world famous Rath Yatra of Puri, in the eastern part of India.
The Rath Yatra starts with the Gundicha Yatra, which is the journey of the three deities Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balabhadra towards the Gundicha Temple. The gods journey with great fervour atop three magnificent chariots along the 3 km. long grand road (Bada Danda) of Puri from the main shrine (Sri Mandir).
In the nine-day festival, after spending over a week at the Adapa Mandapa of Gundicha Temple, the deities prepare to return to the (Ratna Bedi) at the main shrine. The return chariot festival is popular as Bahuda Yatra. The deities are again installed on their respective chariots (Raths) and pulled towards Sri Mandir along the same grand road with lakhs of devotees in attendance.
