Today’s woman has finally showed that she can successfully trespass the male domain and equal her counterpart in courage, duty and strength. Along with the high profile career options and alluring professions it’s gratifying to see our women opt for the uniform.

Apart from the armed services, the next best option for the gutsy girls is the police. Odisha figures among the top five states having the highest number of women in the police, many of whom are in the traffic department. The young traffic police are energetic, full of dreams and passionate about their jobs.

”I always wanted to join the police and my family supported me whole heartedly. I may look delicate but can fight at least four at a time and combat any situation. Though it’s a male dominated arena, we have our space and get complete cooperation from our colleagues. Nothing can beat the feeling of happiness when a kid waves at me from the back seat of the car or when an aged person blesses me”, says the quiet looking Sushree Sangita Mohanty.

Inspite of the fact that traffic police was considered as a male dominated profession it’s good to see more girls choosing this profession with a feeling of commitment  and patriotism .Kanak Manjari Minz said with a tinge of pride in her voice,” The respect and admiration one gets after you adorn this uniform cannot be explained in words. We bask in its glory so we have to take the criticism with a pinch of salt. Every person has a different perception and that happens in any profession. “

“I was mesmerised with this profession since I was a kid and stood next to every police I met in our village to get a salute. Our job is tough and we have to do our duty even on festivals and miss out important celebrations in the family but still I love my job and cannot think of any other profession apart from this. I encourage young girls to take up this profession. It hurts to see the violence inflicted on women and help women as much as I can”, says Gita Rani Swain.

Tikina Pradhan was among the first eight selected traffic police woman. She has also won a lot of awards for her good performance and bravery.” Every body gets a chance to serve the people and according to me my profession is the best way to do so. There is healthy competition and one should accept it willingly. The smile on the face of an accident victim when he is rushed to the hospital cannot be compensated by anything in this world”, she added.

“My duty is my passion and so I chose a spouse in this same profession who can understand my profession better and we can have good compatibility” said Madhumita Lenka.

Hence when you see a woman managing the traffic on a rainy day or under the scorching sun, please smile at her to wipe her tiredness and make her feel special.

  2. Woman and man…..are only flip sides of the same coin. Each gender has it’s own significance and importance in the journey of life. No one gender can claim superiority over the other and therefore comes the concept of gender equality which is one of the most important tenets of today’s world that needs to be accepted and appreciated by the populace.
Historically, women have been subjugated, for whatever reasons ; but times are changing. Women are getting opportunities to express themselves in areas and domains which were hitherto open to men only. Case in point are the defence services. Today all the wings: army, navy and the air force have opened their doors for aspiring and eligible women candidates. The Police Department has many women in topmost posts across the nation. The determination and forbearance of these women should not only be lauded but should be a benchmark for both, men and women, to live up to.
We tend to overlook the fact that in our predominantly patriarchal society, women have to face more resistance and hence their path is riddled with more obstacles. Transcending the odds makes their achievements more noteworthy. We as a society should give women, in all fields, their due share.
I can’t help but quote the famous dalogue from the blockbuster movie Dangal – Mhaari chhoriyan chhoron se kam hain ke?
    Let’s salute all women achievers.
