Japanese car maker Toyota finally launched its much anticipated midsized sedan Yaris in India. The sedan is set to compete with top in class models like the Verna, City, Vento, Rapid and Ciaz among others. The car has crossed sales of more than 1000 units on the first day and Toyota says it has taken nearly two months’ equivalent of orders so anyone booking the car now will have to wait for about 8 weeks to get it delivered.

The exterior of the car comes with dual tone bumpers, a new grille design and day time LED headlamps at the front while the rear sports a fluidic headlamp design. The two base models feature 15 inch steel wheels with front disc brakes while the two top models are equipped with alloy wheels and four disc brakes.

Inside the cabin, Toyota Yaris gets several first-in-class features including height adjustable driver seat, keyless entry, electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors (ORVMs), roof-mounted air vents with ambient illumination, acoustic and vibration control glass, 4.2-inch TFT MID with Eco wallet, hand/air gesture control for the infotainment system, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and tail lamps with LED line guide. Other highlights include projector headlamps with LED line guide, LED DRLs, Shark-fin antenna, piano black interior, rear power outlets, rear sunshade and more

Unlike its competitors, Yaris comes only with a petrol engine. It is a 1.5-litre engine that’s good for 107PS of maximum power and 140Nm of peak torque, coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. Toyota is also offering a 7-speed CVT with the Yaris across all the variants. In the top-spec VX variant, the CVT comes with paddle shifters as well. The Yaris delivers a claimed fuel efficiency of 17.10 (MT) and 17.80 (CVT).

Now for the most important part, Toyota Yaris has been certified five out of five stars by the ASEAN NCAP safety test authority. The car comes with seven airbags, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) along with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist as standard fitment in the budget range. The two top tier variants come with added vehicle stability control and tyre pressure monitoring system.
