Surprising but true. Many baby cobras were found under a mud house of a daily wage labourer at Paikasahi village in Bhadrak district

When Bijay Bhuyan, an agricultural labourer of Shyampur village in Bhadrak, Odisha went asleep on the night of 22nd June he would have never imagined that he would find 111 cobra babies crawling under his floor the next day.

On the morning of 23rd June, Bhuyan and his daughter witnessed two baby cobras crawling on the floor. Terrorised by this event, they called for help. Local snake catchers along with the help of forest officials dug the floor and to their shock they saw hundreds of cobras intertwined with each other.

The baby cobras were estimated to be 2-3 days old. Word spread by and many people gathered around to witness the event. Surprisingly, there were only 26 hatched eggs which raised questions like did all the snakes hatch at the same time and where are the rest of the hatched eggs? Bhuyan mentioned that he witnessed snakes around his house many times but never disturbed them as he saw them as good luck and prosperity and also because they never attacked him or his family. He never knew that the situation would turn out so bad.

“The forest officials continued their search and found two adult cobras and scores of unhatched eggs after 24 hours of the incident at Paikasahi village” the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bhadrak, Amlan Nayak, said.

The officials now aim to search and rescue the cobras as they have a high risk of threatening the safety of the residents in the locality. There are talks of releasing the rescued baby cobras in their natural habitat by releasing them into the Hadagarh Wildlife Sanctuary, which is nearby.
