After Mexico got beaten by Sweden it meant that all their hopes relied on South Korea to at least get a draw against Germany in order to qualify. The South Koreans instead beat the Germans 2-0 and did the Mexicans a favour that they will always remember for their life.
Mexicans all over chanted South Korea’s name in celebration everywhere they went. The celebration went to such an extent that the fans in Mexico City gathered around and mobbed the South Korean embassy and called out the ambassador to personally thank him and invited him to drink tequila shots, even though he had nothing to do with the football team of South Korea.
Byoung-yin Han the consul general at the embassy, said, “There’s no distinction between Mexicans and Koreans today.” The mob even put a Korean staff of the embassy onto their shoulders and chanted “Korean, brother, now you are Mexican”. Even the Mexican Fans who were in Kazan showed their appreciation towards the South Koreans by buying them free food and drinks and celebrating with them, all night.
Mexico qualifies into the knockout stages, after finishing 2nd in their group with 6 points and will face the mighty Brazil in the Round of 16.
