Sunabesha refers to the golden attire of the holy trinity of Puri. Sunabesha is also known as “Rajadhiraja Besha”. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are adorned with different type of gold jewellery.

The three lords look so beautiful that one can never take his\her eyes off them. Lakhs of devotees come to Puri to see the golden attire of deities as the chariots of three lords are kept in front of the Singhadwara (The Lions Gate).

This Sunabesha ceremony observed on Bahuda Ekadashi during Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival). It is believed that whoever gets a chance to sees the Lord in Suna Besha gets free of all his bad karmas.

Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are decorated with a variety of ornaments included golden necklaces, golden crown, golden peacock feather and silver conch. Three deities are loaded with yellow shinning gold from top to bottom.

On this ceremony deities are decorated with 138 types of ornaments and these are measured more than a hundred kilos. The ornaments include hand, giant limbs-feet and weapons like mace, lotus, wheel and conch and huge size of tiaras besides number of extra ordinary necklaces. The deities also put on big kundalas in their ears and chest guards all made of gold. Every year the special darshan of Lords continues till late night.

These ornaments are made up of solid gold and these ornaments are heavy to carry. When the ornaments are brought out for decorating the deities, a platoon of policemen and servitors guard the boxes of ornaments. Also, for security reasons, not many people are allowed to be near the chariots while the deities are installed in the Sunabesha.
