Good news for mobile phone users in India. You now have a UIDAI-approved process for linking your Aadhaar number with your mobile number from the comfort of your home. It is mandatory to link your Aadhaar number to your mobile numbers by 31st March this year to continue using telecom services.

Earlier, a consumer had to go to the nearby store or service centre operated by your telecom operator and have them do the linking. Now, one can simply dial a number and follow the instructions presented by an Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) to link his/ her mobile numbers.

To register, one can dial 14546 and follow the instructions. To complete the linking, one will need his/ her Aadhaar number to receive an OTP from Aadhaar servers. The IVRS will also ask for your consent for accessing the Aadhaar database.

An indirect benefit of such a system is that misuse of your Aadhaar data to open illegal Bank Accounts, as a telecom company was found doing recently, will no longer be possible.

“Such an initiative by the Government is a welcome move for most telecom subscribers because now we don’t have to worry about physically going to the store for verification” said Prajna Purbasha Tripathy, a student of Mass Communication in Bhubaneswar.

It also comes as a boon for senior citizens, working women and common people alike because such telecom stores normally operate from 10-6 from Monday to Saturday making it difficult for most persons to go for linking Aadhaar to mobile.
